If your group includes grandparents or small kids, this is the lowest-effort backdrop of the three, with short walks from car to sand. Sunset here lights the water and the silhouette of the offshore islets.

Keawakapu Beach, at Wailea's north end, is a frequent request for its long empty stretch at the golden hour.

Kapalua: dramatic cliffs on the northwest shore

Kapalua trades sand for structure, lava-rock points, cliff lines and framing ironwood trees on Maui's northwest corner. The listing calls the cliffs dramatic and they photograph exactly that way, especially with winter swell throwing whitewater below. It is the right choice for couples who want something less postcard and more editorial.

It is also the location where the mobility warning matters most; the paths and rock shelves are why this session is not suitable for wheelchair users or people with mobility impairments.

Makena: wide seascapes and the emptiest horizons

Makena, south of Wailea, is the wild end of the south shore: big sky, long sand, and the least built-up backdrops on this coastline. The listing calls it serene seascapes, and at golden hour the light comes across the water almost sideways. If you want frames with no buildings and few people in them, ask for Makena.

Hawaii's Department of Land and Natural Resources requires commercial operators, including photographers shooting paying clients, to hold a permit for activity on state beaches. Plenty of cheap sessions skip it, which is your risk, not the photographer's, if a ranger interrupts the shoot.
